'Redwood'

JESSE MEYERS – ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Female (cis, trans or non-binary). 50 years old. White. Jewish, cosmopolitan, successfully runs her own fashion label in NYC, where she has scraped her way to the top via sheer will and lots of charisma. Jesse has a streak of party girl in her and talks a mile a minute. She can be rowdy and hilarious - but right now she is flailing and in grief. Jesse was a young single mom, who later raised her son with her long-time girlfriend – but her son has recently and tragically passed, and Jesse cannot sit still in her skin or her home. Actor will do rope climbing/flying in show. Alto/mezzo mix. Able to sing comfortably in folk and pop/rock styles, including a strong high belt.

BECCA – ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Female (cis, trans or non-binary). Late 20s to mid 30s, any ethnicity. Jewish by choice. An athlete and expert tree climber – in excellent shape, strong. Also a scientist/forest canopy botanist – resourceful and quick. Both emotionally and physically, Becca is made of steel. She is guarded, intense, and passionate. She uses her dry humor to navigate the world and wields her sarcasm as a weapon. In the course of the show, Becca’s walls come down and her compassion grows. Actor will do rope climbing/flying in show. Alto-mix - Sings in pop/rock style more than “legit” (e.g. think vocals of Lauryn Hill, Shea Diamond, Annie Lennox, Tamar-Kali, etc.).

FINN – ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Male (cis, trans or non-binary). Mid 50s to mid 60s. Any ethnicity. A forest canopy botanist and an expert tree climber, who is in excellent physical shape. Fabian is both an outdoorsman with a deep connection to the natural world and also a professor who knows how to bring that world to life through words. He’s earthy, gruff, warm, paternal, not a false bone in his body. Fabian possesses a Zorba-like passion for adventure and lust for life. Actor will do rope climbing/flying in show. Baritenor – Sings in pop/folk style more than “legit.” (e.g. think vocals of Gipsy Kings, Perrozompopo, Richie Havens, Vicente Amigo, Altemar Dutra).

MEL – ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Female (cis, trans or non-binary). 40s to mid 50s. BIPOC. A photojournalist and political activist from NYC. As a partner to Jesse for 20+ years, she has been a grounding presence. She is sensual and earthy, with a gravitas to her actions and words. Mel is firm, steady, gentle, sexy – with a deep, robust laugh. She knows what she wants, and always gets it. Alto– Sings in a pop/folk/jazz style (e.g. think Tracy Chapman, Lizz Wright, Patti Cathcart (Tuck and Patti), Odetta. Joan Armatrading.).

Spencer is Jesse’s son from a brief, long ago marriage. Personable, sweet, and charming – with a streak of mischief. Spencer was a fun-loving, quirky kid who couldn’t stay out of trouble. Bright eyes, bright mind, and when Spencer smiled, the world was right. Note: this actor will additionally play several other young men Jesse meets on her journey, each with a different disposition and energy.
