No doubt we have all heard from some of our members about questions about COVID-19 vaccines: 

 How do we know the vaccines are safe? Who will pay for me to get vaccinated? 

 Will we have access when we need it? What does vaccination mean regarding testing in the workplace? 

 How will vaccination plans impact our workplaces and our audiences? 

 While some of us have already been vaccinated and others are waiting our turn, it is important to understand the development, safety, efficacy and equitable distribution of the vaccines, as well as hear about the initial experiences with the vaccine. 

That's why we'd like to invite you and your members to our Vaccine Access Webinar - Answering Your Questions About COVID-19 Vaccines, presented in partnership with the Adult Vaccine Access Coalition on Wednesday, April 7, at 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT/10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT. 

 Our president, Kate Shindle, will be moderating, and we'll have some very impressive guests to answer member questions. 

Our panel is still in formation, but we have already confirmed CDR David Fitter, MD (CDR, USPHS) who serves as the Branch Chief with the Immunization Systems Branch within the Global Immunization Division at the Center for Global Health, and who has also served multiple rotations as a co-lead for the Vaccine Task Force in CDC’s COVID-19 Response; and Peter Marks, MD, PHD, a hematologist with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), where he is the director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, which is responsible for assuring the safety and effectiveness of biological products such as vaccines. 

 This one-hour webinar will be open to the public, and we are happy to list your union as a co-sponsor. The program will stream on Facebook Live, so we can make the video available to crosspost, which means you can take your own RSVPs and direct your members to watch the video on your own page. New Jersey Educators Vaccines available Saturday, March 27

 We have learned that Walgreen’s is holding THREE educator vaccination clinics this Saturday, March 27.  There are approximately 1,000 appointments available and they will be filled on a  first-come, first-served basis.

While the appointment locations are identified by county they are open to all New Jersey k-12 educators, no matter where you live or work. The locations are:

• Ocean County

• Mercer County

• Passaic County

What is Playback?

Playback Theater is a community building project that combines storytelling and improvisational theater where audience members share their own stories and see them enacted or “played back” by actors.  Just so you know, you don’t have to share a story if you don’t want to. Listening is great, too!

Playback Theatre has been used as a forum for the exchange of diverse experiences since the 1970’s.  Recently, stories have dealt with living through Covid 19 as senior citizens, racial conflict and reconciliation and immigrant and refugee experiences, to mention a few.

Circle of Sparks Playback Project is a program of Culture Connection Theater.

Summary of Senate's significant additions to the American Recovery Plan from DPE

 The attached one pager lays out the significant additions that Senate Democrats are making to the American Recovery Plan. Member Alert: New York City Open Culture Program

 

Dear Carlo,   You may have seen media reports that New York City has launched the “Open Culture” program. The city program allows producers to apply for a permit to close a city street and hold an outdoor performance at a reduced cost.    If you are approached to work on a New York City “Open Culture” project, please contact your business representative immediately before accepting. The current structure of the program does not meet Equity’s minimum standards for wages or COVID-19 safety.   The city permit process does not require that producers pay a living wage. The city permit process does not require producers provide proof of workers’ compensation insurance. The city permit does not require that workers be tested for COVID-19. The city permit does not require performers to be socially distanced. The city permit does not have a formal requirement for a COVID-19 safety officer. The city permit process does not have appropriate safeguards to keep crowds distanced from the workers.   In fact, the city permit process does not require proof that producers pay any wage at all - while explicitly permitting ticket sales and collecting donations. This is disappointing and unfair to the arts workers in our city. It is especially concerning that the city has put forward a plan that does not ensure a safe workplace for workers.   Equity staff have had ongoing conversations with the city about this program. We've submitted testimony about the need to ensure that arts workers are properly protected and compensated. Those conversations will continue. Meanwhile, if an Equity producer wants to hire Equity members to do this work with an Equity contract and appropriate safety protocols, we will be happy to work with them.   In the meantime, I am happy to report that the state arts program, NY PopsUp, has taken important steps forward when it comes to pay and safety plans.   Equity staff and your elected leadership have been in ongoing dialogue with state leaders about this program since it was announced in January. As a result of those conversations, we have signed an agreement allowing for Equity members to be paid for NY PopsUp performances with a living wage and health and pension payments. The NY PopsUp team has also incorporated our feedback into their safety plan, improving the safety for everyone associated with the project.   We will continue to push New York City to make changes to the “Open Culture” program that prioritize pay and safety for the workers who make New York City a cultural destination. As of now, AEA has 1700 initiation fee you get credited for 350 so net = 1350.

You can pay 600 and owe 750 to be paid over 2 years. 

$1,700 paid within a maximum two-year period. While working on contract, deductions will be made based on your weekly salary.

DUES

Equity's dues structure has two components:

• Basic dues: $174 annually, billed at $87 twice a year each May* and November 2020

  $176 annually, billed at $88 twice a year each May and November 2021, and forward

• Working dues: 2.5% of gross earnings under Equity contract, which are collected through weekly payroll deductions

Please note: gross earnings do not include the minimum portion of out-of-town per diem expense monies.

* Due to the extraordinary circumstances of the current moment, the Spring 2020 billing period has been extended. Read more in the member portal.

INITIATION FEE

$1,700 paid within a maximum two-year period. While working on contract, deductions will be made based on your weekly salary.

Effective January 1, 2022 - $1800

You are cautioned that your membership, and any monies paid, will be forfeited should you fail to complete payment of the full initiation fee within the two-year time period.

All membership privileges, including the right to vote, attend meetings and Equity-only auditions, commence upon the initial payment of $600 towards the initiation fee within six months of filing your application.

If you are joining Equity through 4As affiliation or the Equity Membership Candidate Program, the minimum $600 initial payment is due with your application.

If your parent union (the first performing artist union you joined) is the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), Canadian Actors' Equity (CAEA) or the Guild of Italian American Artists (GIAA), you may be eligible for a reduction in the Equity Initiation Fee based on the amount of the initiation fee you paid to your parent union. You will be advised of the amount of this reduction by the Equity Membership Department at the time you submit your application.

CHECK OFF DEDUCTIONS

If you are working under an Equity contract at the time of joining, authorization for dues and initiation fee deductions from your weekly salary appears on the face of the Equity contract. Weekly deductions towards the balance due will be made from your salary according to the following schedule. These deductions will continue whenever you are employed until the full initiation fee is paid.

BILLING PERIODS

Equity's billing periods are May and November of each year; bills are mailed in April and October, and payment is due by May 31 and November 30, respectively. Payments can be made by credit card in the Member Portal. Additionally, payments can be made by phone, or dropped off or mailed to any Equity office. Cash, check, money order or Visa/MasterCard is accepted. Please note, due to the extraordinary circumstances of the current moment, the Spring 2020 billing period has been extended. Read more in the member portal.

MEMBERSHIP REFUND POLICY

• Payments made by Members of Actors’ Equity to satisfy dues, fees, and late charges will not be refunded.
• Overpayments by Members of Equity will be refunded upon request of the Member via phone to the membership department at an Equity office or e-mail to membership@actorsequity.org.
• Actors’ Equity Association reserves the right to refuse or terminate a membership in Actors' Equity in accordance with Equity’s membership policies, the Equity Constitution and By-Laws and consistent with federal law.
• If a new applicant or a rejoining applicant is refused membership a refund of the initiation fee paid will be made.
• Membership resignation received in writing to an Equity office shall not relieve a member of any obligations or moneys that the member owed or was assessed prior to the date of such resignation.

All refund requests must be made by the applicant or member. Refunds will be credited back to the original credit card used for payment or may be refunded by check. These above policies apply to all Actors' Equity Association memberships unless otherwise noted in the corresponding Equity materials. Please read all Equity information thoroughly. All question about union membership or payment of union dues should be directed to membership@actorsequity.org.

LOSS OF MEMBERSHIP

If you are delinquent in the payment of dues for a period of two years, and you did not apply for inactive status, or if you fail to pay your initiation fee in full in the specified time period, you are considered "out-of-benefits" and your membership is automatically terminated. In order to rejoin Equity, you must secure a new contract and pay a new initiation fee. Please note if you have previously been a member of Actors' Equity Association you are not able to rejoin through a 4As affiliation or participation in the EMC program. Members are therefore strongly urged to remain in good standing with Equity.
