Actors' Equity Association Applauds Senate Introduction of the Bipartisan Performing Artist Tax Parity Act

New York — Actors’ Equity Association, the national union representing more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers working in live theatre, applauded the Senate introduction of the bipartisan Performing Artist Tax Parity Act (PATPA), introduced by Senators Mark Warner (D-VA) and Bill Hagerty (R-TN). This bill would correct an unintended consequence of the 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act which led to tax increases for many performing artists who could no longer deduct the cost of their ordinary and necessary unreimbursed business expenses.

While tax reform did not harm high-income artists, many others in the industry have reported massive tax increases because they lost the ability to deduct their business expenses. “People sit with me and just break into tears because they didn’t know what to do,” Sandra Karas, a tax attorney and secretary-treasurer of Actors’ Equity Association, told the Los Angeles Times, which covered the devastating tax increases that hit performing artists.

Professional actors, stage managers and musicians, for example, typically spend 20 to 30 percent of their income on necessary expenses -- such as to pay for travel to auditions or a talent agent -- to stay in the business and to procure employment.

“I am grateful for the leadership of Senators Warner and Hagerty as they fight for tax fairness for performing artists while the industry is in a historic crisis,” said Kate Shindle, president of Actors’ Equity Association. “The overwhelming majority of Equity stage managers and actors are working-class people who work hard to make ends meet, and unlike other workers, they often have to spend 30 percent of their income on business expenses. Our producers can deduct their business expenses, and we should be able to do so too. The Performing Artist Tax Parity Act will put more money in the pockets of working performers when they need it the most as we work toward recovery in the arts sector.”

The bill would update the bipartisan Qualified Performing Artist (QPA) deduction, which was originally signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. The QPA allows an above-the-line tax deduction for qualified performing artists but has been limited since it was enacted to a total adjusted gross income of the taxpayer to $16,000. PATPA would update the deduction to $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 for married artists filing jointly. The House version of the Performing Artist Tax Parity Act was introduced by Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) and Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) in July. With the Senate introduction, there is now a bipartisan bill in both chambers of Congress.

“Despite their disproportionate influence and contributions to local communities and economies, the struggle of Americans in the arts has been recognized for years,” wrote Reps. Buchanan and Chu in The Hill when the bill was first introduced. “Most of the stage actors and stage managers who belong to Actors’ Equity Association and members of SAG-AFTRA who work in TV and film are hard-working – often struggling to get by – middle-class taxpayers. They have fallen through the cracks of an imperfect system.”

To build support for PATPA, Equity has come together with arts and entertainment unions, working in partnership with each other to meet with Congressional offices. Since PATPA was first introduced in June 2019, the unions have held dozens of meetings with congressional staff. Equity and SAG-AFTRA have also submitted testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee regarding the need for tax fairness for actors and stage managers.

ACTORS' EQUITY ASSOCIATION, founded in 1913, is the U.S. labor union that represents more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers. Equity endeavors to advance the careers of its members by negotiating wages, improving working conditions and providing a wide range of benefits (health and pension included). Beetlejuice,' Broadway

CATEGORY: THEATER: MUSICALS

UNION AEA EXPIRES:September 28, 2021 8:00 PM

Beetlejuice Broadway LLC

Alex Timbers, dir.; Connor Gallagher, choreo.; Eddie Perfect, music & lyrics; Anthony King & Scott Brown, book; Kris Kukul, music supervision; Rachel Hoffman, casting

Seeking video submissions from Equity principal actors for roles in "Beetlejuice." Synopsis: Beetlejuice, a malevolent spirit masquerading as a guide to the Netherworld meets the Maitlands, a recently deceased couple learning the ropes of haunting their own home. But when angst-ridden Lydia Deetz moves into the Maitland house with her family, Beetlejuice launches a havoc-wrecking quest that forces the Maitlands to confront what it means to be fully dead and Lydia to confront what it means to be fully alive.

To apply, see the "Key Details" section below

Beetlejuice: 18+

ageless, somewhere between 12 and 12,000, maturity-wise. The life of the party and the deadest guy in the room; Beetlejuice is more than a little ADD and free-associative; a handsy, horny motormouth who overshares and disregards all notions of personal space. Strategic and cagy and wildly dangerous. Excellent singer. Bold, physical, comedic.

Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

To apply, see the "Key Details" section below

Lydia: 18+

late teens, dark, smart and moody, with a jet black sense of humor and a streak of anarchy, Lydia's a step ahead of almost everyone she meets, living or dead, but she's at the mercy of a mania, just like Beetlejuice. Lydia wants life to mean something. The world seems small to Lydia since her mother died; she longs for it to reveal itself as something more fantastical than it is. Great rock belt/mix voice. Drily comic.

Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

To apply, see the "Key Details" section below

Barbara: 30-39

a mouse that didn't roar. Which doesn't mean she can't. Sweetly neurotic, devoted to her carefully-curated house and her careful curator of a house-husband, Barbara is positive, affirming, and unfailingly kind. She and Adam strenuously protect each other while inadvertently holding each other back. Barbara has a fierce heart and a heroic mother-bear instinct. A deft, subtle comic actress, disarmingly honest. Great Pop/Musical Theater voice with a strong mix.

Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

To apply, see the "Key Details" section below

Adam: 30-39

one of those “nice guys” who only have two problems: Can’t seem to get anything started, can’t seem to get anything finished. A putterer-craftsman, Adam adores his wife Barbara and the cozy, cloistered, slightly claustrophobic, conspicuously childless life they’ve built together. What Adam doesn’t realize is: That fastidiously unfinished life of his is nearly finished. Great singer.

Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

Charles: 40-59

a mini-mogul who needs to control life's chaos to feel safe. And yet, not far beneath his diamond-hard surface, he feels constantly out of control. Charles is a master-class in blustery overcompensation and strict compartmentalization.

Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

Delia: 30-49

ditzy yet ambitious, Delia is unfailingly positive, unfailingly clueless, and always looking for a silver lining, even when nobody’s asking for one. She’s never faced anyone as smart and cutting as Lydia before. Excellent singer with a strong pop/belt/mix.
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

Rehearsal and Production Dates & Locations

Rehearsals begin on/about Feb. 21, 2022; open ended run begins on/about Apr. 8 in NYC.

Breakdown

Bob Wallace (30-35) Must be a very good singer with a crooning style who moves well; baritone. A major singing star, Bob is the guiding force behind the song and dance team of Wallace and Davis. He wears his fame easily and is a born leader, but has some trouble with social and romantic interactions. Despite his occasional gruffness, he is a deeply kind and principled man who is searching for his true love.

Phil Davis (25-30) Strong jazz and tap-dancing needed; baritone-tenor. The fun-loving, go-getting song-and-dance partner of the team Wallace and Davis. An irrepressible clown, operator, and incorrigible ladies’ man who is determined to see his friend happy, even if it requires scheming and outright deception. He has a boyish charm.

Betty Haynes (30-35) Must have rich chest mix sound and a soprano extension; must move well. The sensible, responsible half of the upcoming song-and-dance team, the Haynes Sisters. Destined to be a star in her own right, she is nonetheless hesitant to take the spotlight for herself. A woman of decent, upstanding principles, she is devoted to her younger sister. Like Bob, she hides her yearning for true love under a protective shell.

Judy Haynes (25-30s) Strong jazz and tap dancing needed; chest mix. The younger, more ambitious, Haynes sister. While wholesome and adorable, she is flirty and scheming – a winning charmer!

General Henry Waverly (late 50’s to mid-60’s) sings a portion of one song, but this is a non-dancing role. A retired U.S. Army General, adjusting to returning to civilian life in post-World War II America. Once a powerful leader, he now struggles to run a struggling inn in Vermont. He remains a man of great principle and dignity. Beneath his curmudgeonly military exterior lies a warm, compassionate man in need of family and love.

Martha Watson (late 40’s to mid-60’s) Must be a winning, appealing character comedienne with a belt voice. Once a Broadway star, now the General’s housekeeper and receptionist at the inn. Martha has a very dry, wry, wisecracking sense of humor. Bighearted but rather unsentimental, she runs the General’s life in spite of his protestations. She is an irrepressible meddler, but always for what she believes to be the other guy’s best interests.

Susan Waverly (12+ years old, to play and appear as a 9-year-old) must have an excellent belt voice, and be able to move well. The General’s granddaughter visiting from her home in California, Susan is a lovable and outgoing real kid. She is very smart, wise beyond her years, and cares deeply about her grandfather. She has been bitten hard by the showbiz bug and demonstrates everything that is winning but not self-conscious in the ultimate child performer. Note: The theatre requires vaccination of the cast so anyone submitting for this role must be 12 years old and up so that they are eligible to be vaccinated based on current CDC guidelines.

Ralph Sheldrake (Mid to late 30’s) Baritone. Army buddy of Bob and Phil’s, now a major television executive with the Ed Sullivan Show. Fast-talking New York professional.

CHORUS:

Male Ensemble (Chorus / Ensemble): Male, 18+

to play a variety of supporting roles. Characters are early 20s to mid 30s. Major tap skills and must be equally strong in ballroom and theatre jazz. Must sing very well.

Female Ensemble (Chorus / Ensemble): Female, 18+

to play a variety of supporting roles. Characters are early 20s to mid 30s. Major tap skills and must be equally strong in ballroom and theatre jazz. Must sing very well.

Ralph Sheldrake (Chorus / Ensemble): 30-39

army buddy of Bob and Phil’s, now a major television executive with the "Ed Sullivan Show." Fast-talking New York professional; baritone.

Ezekiel Foster (Chorus / Ensemble): 40-59

the ultimate taciturn New Englander who helps out at the inn and takes life at a very slow pace; definitely has a wry sense of humor; may be double-cast with other roles; baritone.

Collapse All Roles

Ensemble Men (Chorus / Ensemble): Male, 18+
