Breakdown

A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Adapted from: Charles Dickens and many a British folk carol.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR: This Christmas Carol imagines a group of dystopian travelers who convert a found space to Dickension England through the power of play and object transformation. Making up a "kind chorus", the cast will devise physical theater sequences to move us from place to place and inspire the Scrooges among us to celebrate the possibility of transformation.

A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT: We are all inside Scrooge’s world today: a time of rampant grief and resentment turned into greed and fear. How do we find our hearts again? How do we become generous again? This adaptation offer the start of a path in a more forgiving direction through an approach that treasures the spirit and skill of actors, the impulse to play, to reach for something yet to be made or discovered, and to invite others into their imagination. Through collaborative storytelling and song, I hope this play visits its audience much as the Spirits visit Scrooge: with care, buoyancy, and much determination.

Note: Actors who sing are strongly encouraged to submit.

[BOB CRATCHIT AND OTHERS] 30s - 50s, BIPOC, he/him. Kind hearted, nervous, hard working. Doubles as Young Marley.

[FRED AND OTHERS] 20s - 30s, BIPOC, he/him. Ebullient, playful, puppy dog. Doubles as Young Scrooge.

[EMILY CRATCHIT AND OTHERS] Mid 30s - Late 40s, any ethnicity, she/her. AKA Mrs. Cratchit. Rebellious, eloquent, warm. Strong soul rock singing voice.

[GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST/KIND CHORUS LEADER AND OTHERS] - Any age, any ethnicity, any gender. Mischievous, child-like, mercurial. Strong multi-octave folk-pop singing voice (think Joni Mitchell).

[BELLE AND OTHERS] 20s - Early 30s, BIPOC, she/her. Wickedly clever, warm, doesn't suffer fools. Strong musical theatre style singing voice.

[GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT AND OTHERS] Any age and ageless, BIPOC, any gender. Jovial, wise, full of joy and abundance. Has the power to show people the truth. Has the humor to not take that power too seriously. Boisterous, larger than life, with a fun wry grit in both personality and singing style. Rock, blues, gospel voice. Think James Earl Jones meets Bonnie Raitt.

Synopsis Of Plays

"Merry Me" (Hansol Jung, playwright; Leigh Silverman, dir.; Rehearsals begin Sept. 12; runs Oct. 11-Dec. 10)

On an island not far away from the vulnerable coasts of the enemy state, a mysterious blackout has left the Navy restless and itching for action. Lieutenant Shane Horne has occupied her time satisfying the libidinous needs of all the women on the base— including the jealous general's wife. But her own merries will not come. Meanwhile a famed Angel re-descends to amend her previous prophesy, sending the Navy's psychiatrist on an epic quest to save humanity. Will the general discover the affair? Will the earth be saved? Will they ever be merry enough?

"I Love You So Much I Could Die"

I Love You So Much I Could Die is part concert, part play, intricate and intimate, wry and tender, elemental and wholly unforgettable. Through monologues performed by a computer and songs performed by the playwright, NYTW Usual Suspect Mona Pirnot wrestles with the private and unspeakable in a very public way. NYTW Usual Suspect and Tony Award nominee Lucas Hnath directs.

"Here There Are Blueberries"

A mysterious album of never before seen Nazi-era photographs arrives at the desk of United States Holocaust Memorial Museum archivist Rebecca Erbelding. As Rebecca and her team of historians begin to unravel the shocking story behind the images, the album soon makes headlines around the world. In Germany, a businessman sees the album online, recognizes his own grandfather in the photos, and begins a journey of discovery that will lead him to a reckoning of his family's past and his country's history. Here There Are Blueberries tells the story of these photographs – what they reveal about the perpetrators of the Holocaust, and about our own humanity.

Actors’ Equity Association Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Ending Affirmative Action in Higher Education

New York -- Actors’ Equity Association, the national labor union representing more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers in live theatre, has issued the following statement in response to the news that the Supreme Court has put an end to affirmative action in higher education:

“Actors’ Equity Association has long supported affirmative action as a key strategy for ensuring the equitable inclusion of those who face discrimination – in education, in employment and in the world at large. Today’s Supreme Court decision claims to establish ‘race neutrality’ in educational admissions; in reality, it places barriers in the way of people of color who seek opportunities to learn, to work and to grow. We disagree with the court’s decision in the strongest possible terms and resolve to continue fighting for a society – and a theatre industry – that creates openings for everyone to pursue their dreams.”

ACTORS' EQUITY ASSOCIATION, founded in 1913, is the U.S. labor union that represents more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers. Equity endeavors to advance the careers of its members by negotiating wages, improving working conditions and providing a wide range of benefits (health and pension included). Show Breakdown

"An American Soldier"
On October 3, 2011, Chinese-American Army Pvt. Danny Chen was found dead in a guard tower at
his base in Afghanistan. Based on his story and the ensuing courts-martial of Chen’s fellow soldiers,
this New York City premiere opera tells the powerful true story of a young soldier from Manhattan’s
Chinatown who sought to serve his country, only to find his biggest threat was the very people who swore to protect him. Told through the multidimensional music of Huang Ruo ("M. Butterfly," "Book of Mountains and Seas") with libretto by Tony and Grammy winner David Henry Hwang ("M. Butterfly," "Soft Power"), and directed by Obie Award winner Chay Yew ("Cambodian Rock Band," "Sweatshop Overlord"), "An American Soldier"
is a powerful and unforgettable experience.

"Between Two Knees"
Coming to PAC NYC following runs at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Yale Repertory Theatre, McCarter Theater and Seattle Rep, this play centers on one family’s story of love, loss, and resilience spanning the 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee, forced re-education at Indian boarding schools, World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam and the American Indian Movement occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973. Directed by Obie Award winner Eric Ting and infused with the 1491s’ boldly uninhibited comedy, this New York City premiere takes a hard look at the effects of systemic oppression long after our textbooks typically stop teaching Native history. Also, it’s funny.

"Cats"
A fabulously radical reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic dance musical based on T. S. Eliot’s "Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats," inspired by the pageant competitions of New York City’s Ballroom culture. With all new ballroom and club beats, and an edgy eleganza makeover, this Jellicle Ball trades feline for fierce, celebrating the joyous transformation of self at the heart of Cats and Ballroom culture itself.

"Watch Night"
Not long ago. And not far from now. In the aftermath of unspeakable tragedy, an opportunistic reporter visits a sacred space defiled by American violence, in search of a story ready made for Hollywood — only to find that history repeats itself too soon, and too close to home. A PAC NYC World Premiere from the acclaimed artistic team of Tony Award-winning choreographer / dancer / director / writer Bill T. Jones ("Fela!," "Spring Awakening"), poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph ("We Shall Not Be Moved"), composer Tamar-kali ("Mudbound") and dramaturg Lauren Whitehead ("Between the World and Me: Onstage at the Apollo"). "Watch Night" fuses melodies rooted in spirituals, percussive breath and fiery opera with the urgency of slam poetry and Bill T. Jones’ dynamic staging to create an immersive exploration of justice and forgiveness in the face of deadly rage.
