PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Casting Equity actors for "The Devil's Disciple." Synopsis: The Devil's Disciple, written in 1896, is George Bernard Shaw’s classic comedy that employs the unlikely backdrop of the American Revolution. Some of Shaw’s most entertainingly iconographic characters fill out this story of revolt: of one country against another as well as of the inexhaustible battle of the human spirit, illustrating how we choose to create and define ourselves in the face of societal expectations and upheavals. In this play, we find ourselves in a 1777 New Hampshire village where Dick Dudgeon opens his heart to life. Along the way, everyone goes through profound changes of discovery, hope and strength. Gingold Theatrical Group will present this traditionally male-driven story with a cast of five diverse women who will interchangeably play all the roles, in order to more fully embrace Shaw’s examination of the struggle for women’s rights in this country and most specifically at this point in history. Each actor will take on multiple roles throughout the play.

iconoclast. Bright, insightful, witty, finds comfort in irony. He had
hidden his heart until he learns the importance of being open to life
and to others. Standard American Accent.
[TRACK B] (ROLE IS ON
OFFER) 20s-30s. Any race/ethnicity. To play Judith Anderson and the
Narrator of the play. Married young to a Presbyterian small-town
minister, Judith has lived an unquestioning life until circumstances
force her to reevaluate everything, she found comfort in believing.
During the course of the story, she asserts her independence of thoughts
and feelings with boldness and fearlessness for the first time in her
life. Standard American Accent
[TRACK C] (ROLE IS ON OFFER)
40s-50s. Any race/ethnicity. To play Mrs. Dudgeon and Major Burgoyne and
Narration. Mrs. Annie Dudgeon is the embittered mother of two sons, the
product of a marriage she didn’t want. She has lived her life in
continual disappointment and anger. Standard American Accent. Major
James Burgoyne is based on the actual historical figure. He represents
both the power and the absurdity of the British Empire. He has been sent
to America to help lead the British fight against the colonists. He is
wise, witty, amused by the world and everyone in it, and highly
professional. RP British Accent
[TRACK D] 30s-early 40s. Any
race/ethnicity. To play Revered Anderson and Major Swindon and
Narration.Reverend Anthony Anderson is the local Presbyterian Minister.
Though he has never felt quite comfortable leading a congregation from
the pulpit, it was the life his family chose for him and he has
dutifully fulfilled his obligation as a leader of the community and a
devoted husband. Only when faced with a crisis does his subconscious
need to be active does he shift gears and become a hero. Standard
American Accent. Major Swindon is by-the-book British Major, determined
to do what is right. The world is black and white to him with no room
for variation. His wealthy family bought his commission but, due to his
lack of popularity in England, he was sent to The Colonies to help
suppress the rebellion during the American Revolution. RP British
Accent.
[TRACK E] 20s. Any race/ethnicity. To play Sergeant,
Essie and Christy and Narration. The Sergeant was conscripted, possibly
to get out of serving prison time, and sent to The Colonies. He is
knowing, witty, and ambitious. He’ll negotiate anything so long as he
comes out the winner. Irish Accent. Essie is the illegitimate teenage
daughter of the recently executed Dudgeon family uncle, she has been
sent to live in Mrs. Dudgeon’s house without welcome. She is deeply
grateful to Dick Dudgeon for offering her kindness and a home. Standard
American Accent. Christy is the dim-witted son and younger brother in
the Dudgeon household. He rejoices in his limited view of the world and
has no interest in anything aside from his immediate needs. Standard

age gap). A demanding comedic role, the actor plays seventeen parts. He

"Welcome To The Big Dipper"
SYNOPSIS:
What defines home, family, and identity? Joan Wilkes confronts these
questions when she must sell The Big Dipper Inn, near Niagara Falls in
upstate New York, known for its music and African-American heritage.
She’s all set to sign the contract when a blizzard lands some
extraordinary guests at her doorstep. For three days and nights,
everyone waits out the storm. Cultures clash, romance crackles, and Joan
struggles for answers, as a houseful of strangers becomes an unexpected
community.
JOAN WILKES. Female, 40s-early 50s, Black, owner of
The Big Dipper Inn, lead singer in a band. The ultimate hostess, great
mother but tough. Ranges from low chest to medium mezzo (or high belt).

FY25 federal arts and public media funding update
In case you missed it, here is a recap of FY25 federal arts and public media funding activity this week.
NEA/NEH
The House narrowly passed its
FY 25 Interior appropriations bill late Wednesday, which funds the NEA
and NEH at $203.895 million (after we successfully defeated the Brecheen
NEA/NEH defunding amendments.)
In addition, the full Senate Appropriations Committee approved its own FY 25 Interior funding bill, which would allocate $209 million for the NEA and NEH each.
CPB
The
House cancelled next week's floor vote on the FY25 Labor HHS
appropriations bill, which was set to defund CPB. It now seems very
unlikely that the House will vote on the Labor HHS or other remaining
FY25 appropriations bills before the start of the next fiscal year.
The Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to mark up its own FY25 Labor HHS bill on August 1st. We'll let you know when we know the CPB funding amount in it.

SYNOPSIS:
The Tony Award-winning Best Musical of 2012, tells a story of passion
for music, heartbreak, intimacies, and wonder about the future. The plot
follows the relationship between Guy, a street performer who is a
songwriting guitar player, and Girl, whose encouragement and
appreciation of Guy’s music lifts his spirits when he wants to quit
music. As the friends develop feelings for one another, they make
decisions of the heart that will keep the audience guessing about happy
endings.

THE RINK

Please Note: The Rink cast
is made up of two women and six men. The two women are Anna and Angel.
The men are “The Wreckers”. In flashbacks, the men will play all the
people in Anna’s and Angel’s past: men and women; young and old. Kander
& Ebb’s The Rink made its Broadway debut in 1984 and was nominated
for five Tony Awards. In 1978 a failing skating rink in a decaying
boardwalk is the setting for the relationship between an estranged
mother and daughter, and their arguments and reconnection. The Rink is a
story of forgiveness. Mother and daughter learn to let go of the past
in order to be free to move into the future.

Female, 48 - 58.Mezz-Soprano - An Italian housewife who runs a
roller-skating rink on the Eastern seaboard. As she prepares to abandon
it, her estranged daughter returns after a long absence, and she is

Brecheen NEA/NEH defunding amendments defeated

The NEA amendment was defeated in a voice vote, and the NEH amendment was defeated 147-269 in a recorded vote.
Like with the Perry defunding amendments last year, Interior Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Mike Simpson and Ranking Member Chellie Pingree spoke in bipartisan opposition to the amendments during floor debate.
In addition, the press is reporting that the House GOP may not have the votes to pass its overall FY25 Interior appropriations bill. We have heard similar rumors from the Hill today.
