    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Seeking Equity actors for roles in "The Surge."

Synopsis: Conceived as a direct response to Operation Metro Surge, which unleashed an estimated 3,000 ICE agents across Minnesota, a new documentary play, "The Surge," addresses ICE’s actions in the Twin Cities, the deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, and Minnesotans’ collective response.

Commissioned by The Public Theater and the Guthrie Theater in January 2026, acclaimed documentary theater artists Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen engaged with affected communities, capturing firsthand interviews with individuals from all corners of the Twin Cities to create this new play about the emergent mobilization created to protect and care for one another.

Note for All Roles: In the tradition of documentary theater, we are seeking a company of actors who feel effortlessly and authentically part of the world of the play. Actors will be portraying real, living people, and must be comfortable working in a simple, stripped-down, naturalistic style as they deliver direct-address text to an audience. Roles should feel inhabited, not acted.
    Roles in this project

    ACTORS & PERFORMERS
    Ms. Howard

    Lead. Female. 50-59

A Black woman. A former Marine and beloved 30-year high school AP literature teacher. Her life transformed overnight when her student filmed the murder of George Floyd just blocks from her house. Since retiring from teaching in May 2020, she has gathered people at 8 a.m. every morning at George Floyd Square and become the President of the Minneapolis Teachers’ Union. Blunt, extremely direct, and utterly precise in her language, Ms. Howard is a force of nature, driven by a sense of mission rooted in anger and love.
    Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Pastor Hierald

    Lead. Male. 40-59

A Latino Lutheran minister who leads a majority Latine church in a neighborhood specifically targeted by ICE. Humble and unassuming but a beloved leader; walked reluctantly into the spotlight when his church became a massive hub for mutual aid efforts during Metro Surge. His husband is also a minister.
    Ethnicity: Latino / Hispanic
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    David

    Lead. Male. 50-59

A white man. Was at the heart of Minneapolis’ punk activist scene in the 90’s. Laid-back, Zen, and extremely intelligent. Grew up a State Department brat in Africa in the midst of post-colonial revolutions, which gave him a pretty unique take on the world. After decades on the front lines of direct action protesting, he had a family, became a Shiatsu practitioner, and now does the work in a quieter way.
    Ethnicity: White / European Descent
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Justin

    Lead. Male. 50-59

A white man. Energetic and scrappy, with a youthful spirit. A radical puppet artist and old 90s punk. Raised on the Upper West Side, Justin came to Minnesota for college and never left. At the heart of the vibrant, intercultural, punk puppet theater scene in Minneapolis (which might sound fringe, but is actually a huge part of the city). Rebellious, animated, an artist.
    Ethnicity: White / European Descent
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Cortez

    Lead. Male. 40-49

Black. North Minneapolis born and raised; a neighborhood guy. Active and high-energy. A self-professed “knucklehead” until his close friend George Floyd was killed, Cortez transformed in 2020, when he was at the center of mutual aid efforts in George Floyd Square and led a walk from Minneapolis to DC. Now an outspoken community leader, Cortez tends to be in the middle of the action, unafraid to confront authorities.
    Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Rachel

    Lead. Female. 30-49

Indigenous North American. Poised, clear, methodical. A forward-facing leader. Rachel’s father was at the core of the American Indian Movement in the 1960’s and she grew up steeped in urban Indigenous activism. Earned her Master’s in plant biology before becoming an activist herself. Married to VINNY, they are opposites who complement each other and are deeply in love.
    Ethnicity: Indigenous Peoples
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Vinny

    Lead. Male. 40-49

Indigenous North American. Married to Rachel, they are opposites who complement each other and are deeply in love. Grew up rough at Little Earth, the only urban Indigenous housing complex in the U.S. Warm, affable, knows everyone. A former gang member with many years of recovery, Vinny did time in federal prison and is now a beloved youth and community leader in the neighborhood he grew up in.
    Ethnicity: Indigenous Peoples
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Scribbler/Jack

    Lead. Male. 40-49

A white man. SCRIBBLER: A data nerd. Brainy. Got involved very early in the volunteer protection efforts against ICE, he helped develop online vehicle tracking systems from scratch, eventually working as a dispatcher. Sees his work during Metro Surge as a straightforward moral imperative, something anyone would do. JACK: Sporty, grew up in small-town Minnesota, played hockey in high school. Happy go lucky, regular guy. At first he is surprised to find himself becoming part of the movement, but then becomes very committed.
    Ethnicity: White / European Descent
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Arielle

    Lead. Female. 40-49

A white, Jewish woman. A rabbi. Originally from Portland and NYC, she now leads a progressive synagogue in South Minneapolis. Warm, energetic, earthy, big-hearted. She became close with the Good family after Renee’s murder and officiated the funeral.
    Ethnicity: White / European Descent
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Sally/Erica

    Lead. Female. 40-49

A white woman. SALLY: A novelist & recently single mother of a toddler and an infant. Funny & self-effacing. When Renee Good was killed, Sally threw herself into the spontaneous network of mutual aid and protection that sprung up around her, an experience that changed her profoundly. ERICA: an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital-where she trained and worked with Alex Pretti. A queer woman from a conservative family. Although she and Alex shared different political views they liked each other and could always find middle ground.
    Ethnicity: White / European Descent
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Abdu

    Lead. Male. 30-39

An East African man. Grew up in a Kenyan refugee camp, went to university in Ethiopia and did international humanitarian relief work for the UN before emigrating as a young man to Minneapolis. Witnesses firsthand the false narratives that are spread about his community, as well as the raids and abductions by force that are carried out by ICE. Smart, lively and extroverted, Abdu has seen a lot but is an optimistic guy.
    Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Shamira

    Lead. Female. 30-39

An Afghani woman living in Minneapolis. Reserved on the surface; fiercely intelligent and resourceful underneath. Went to Kabul University and then worked for USAID in rural villages. When the Taliban took over, Shamira got her family refugee status and brought them legally to America. She was targeted and detained by ICE during Metro Surge. This is her first time telling that story and she carries the vulnerability of a recent trauma.
    Ethnicity: Middle Eastern
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Sia

    Lead. Female. 40-49

A Hmong woman, originally from Laos. She emigrated to the US by way of Vietnam and has lived in the United States for her entire life. Steely, deep strength beneath a poised exterior. Sia is the Executive Director of the Council of Asian Pacific Minnesotans. Speaks with the composed intelligence of someone used to lobbying politicians. She has always held what she describes as a refugee’s love for America-but what she sees in the winter of 2026 dredges up unanswerable questions and shakes her long-held beliefs.
Ethnicity: Southeast Asian / Pacific Islander
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)
    Mandi

    Lead. Female. 30-39

A white woman. Bigger-bodied and comfortable with it. Alternative style (think piercings, hair coloring, tattoos). Funny, outspoken and a firebrand. Mandi was raised in rural South Dakota and, after a stint in children’s theater, found her purpose as a middle school ESL science teacher. Mandi has a punk rock rebel ethos and is unafraid to call out authority-often using her wit and ironic sense of humor-even when it gets her in trouble. Would fight to the death for her students.
    Ethnicity: White / European Descent
Rate: $1,290 / week (no duration provided)

    Dates & Locations

Runs Feb. 12-March 14 at the Martinson Theater in New York, NY.
