THE ODYSSEY
SEEKING:
ODYSSEUS
(50s) - Role Cast. King of Ithaca. Famously clever; brilliant, even. A
leader devoted to his men. A soldier haunted by what he's done and the
trauma he's witnessed. A refugee trying to find his way back to who he
used to be.
POLITES / POLYPHEMUS / AJAX / SUITOR (50s) - Role
Cast. Polites: Odysseus' second-incommand and right-hand man. Earthy,
pious, cheerfully vulgar, cautious. Polyphemus: a man-eating giant
one-eyed Cyclops with a soft spot for his sheep. Not bright. Ajax: the
shade of the Greek hero Ajax. Suitor: a Grecian frat boy, really.
ELEPNOR
/ SUITOR 2 /ACHILLES (30s-50s) - Role Cast. Elpenor: one of Odysseus'
crew. Smart, capable. Elepnor and Nausithous are a couple. Achilles: the
ghost of the Greek hero Achilles. Suitor: a Grecian frat boy, really.
TELEMACHUS
/ NAUSITHOUS/ HECTOR (20s-30s) - Role Cast. Telemachus: Odysseus' and
Penelope's son. Ages in the play from 10 to 20 years old; played by an
adult. Odysseus left for the wars when Telemachus was too young to
remember him, and Telemachus worships his memory. Nausithous: the
youngest of Odysseus' crew; cocky and naive. Cheerful. Always wears a
red feather. Nausithous & Elepnor are a couple.
EURYLOCHUS /
SUITOR 1 / AGAMEMNON (40s-50s)/As Cast: One of Odysseus' crew; bowman.
Quite doleful at times, darker than some of his crewmates; the #3 on the
crew, more-or-less. Hector: the ghost of the Trojan hero Ajax. Suitor: a
Grecian frat boy, really.
AMPHINOMOUS/ ANTINOUS (30s)/As Cast:
Role Cast. Amphinomous: The smartest of Penelope's suitors. Handsome,
charming. Smooth talker; quite sexy and clever. A master of language
who's able to make even the most flowery language seem heartbreakingly
earnest. Good at playing the long game. Antinous - one of Odysseus'
crew; oarmaster
PENELOPE (Late 40s-50s). Role Cast. Queen of
Ithaca. Trying hard to do the right, cautious thing. Extremely
protective of her son, Telemachus. Strong, smart. Married Odysseus when
she was quite young. Capable of great passion, which she often tries to
repress. Cousin of Helen of Troy. Struggling with the terrible
responsibility of singlehandedly keeping violence from affecting her
people, who are vulnerable. Lonely.
Woman 2 / Circe (30s-40s)/As
Cast: Role Cast. Woman 2: A woman of Troy; The Allotter of Thread.
Circe: amoral - or, rather, follows her own brand of morality. Sorceress
who rules her little island. Not beautiful or pretty. Sexual.
Half-feral. Often relentless. She sees everything. Secretly extremely
lonely; in her way, she is a hungry ghost.
Woman 1 / Nausicaa
(20s)/As Cast: Role Cast. Woman 1: A woman of Troy; The Spinner of
Thread. Nausicaa - Quite beautiful. Quite sheltered. Smart. Idealistic. A
priestess. Appears on the surface to be a male fantasy - but is much,
much more complex than that.
Woman 3 / Madam / Melantho /
Anticlea / Andromache (50s+)/As Cast: Role Cast. Woman 3: A woman of
Troy; The Cutter of Thread. Madam: Odysseus' Ismarean mistress; a
businesswoman, runs the brothel that the sailors take over after Troy
falls. Melantho: Penelope's chief handmaiden; judgmental, cautious.
Anticlea: Odysseus' mother, who appears as a shade. Regal, honest.
Andromache: mother of Astyanax; princess of Troy; full of grief and
rage.
Shadow Puppeteer/As Cast: Any gender. Puppetry and movement experience.
Understudies: four offstage understudies for the above tracks.
