Casting
"Carnelian", a new musical for the screen written and directed by
visual artist and writer Lex Brown, with music co-composed and produced
by Samuel Beebe.
With original music spanning genres of folk,
soul, electronic, classical, and pop, "Carnelian" is an eclectic
exploration of human archetypes. "Carnelian" will premiere as a video
installation at the MIT List Center, and will be open to the public
daily from April 4 - July 29 2023.
Bicyclus, Necyria, Orachrysops
are three symbolic figures – Air, Fire, Earth – representing different
aspects of humanity and society. In three Acts: Dawn, Day, and Dusk,
they grapple with the impending arrival of the unknown, represented by a
body-shaking BOOM (Water). All characters can be played by any gender.
There are a total of 7 vocal numbers, including a solo song for each character.
Roles
Actors & Performers
A deal maker, a man who can balance and weigh consequences, who knows timing, is shrewd and practical, the Capricorn, whose business is the exchange of material and equivalences. Speaks in equivalent terms, net gains and losses; is neither kind nor cruel but always calculating, keeping time. Appearance: Any gender, but masc presenting. Wearing an oversized suit, and a velvet, wide-brimmed hat, insulated by many layers. A yellowish cast to the skin and environment, which is permeated by earthy colors and accumulations. Gold teeth. A tuxedo stripe on the pants goes all the way up to the sideburns.

An optimist; an open-hearted being. Excitable and moody but always in a playful manner, Leonine, catlike; sometimes the pleasure is outwardly directed, sometimes it is inwardly directed, but always based on the ego first. Warmth comes from the inside and therefore they take care of themselves first. One who cooks. Sexual. Morally ambiguous but always to a positive effect; casually destructive when appropriate. Appearance: Androgynous or femme. Wearing robes, rosy toned. Glimpses of shoulders, hips, knees. The hint of a harness or ropes. Between hardness and softness is warmth. Pinks and reds on the skin and environment, which seems open, lively, and variant. Achlamydeous flowers (flowers without petals) or carnelian colored-stones. Carnelian in the ground. Plants. Reading glasses.

A thinker and feeler; adept at both, but anxious when the two are confused. The spirit of water and wind together; the notes of music and the space between the notes. When thoughts and feelings are distinct, there is harmony, together there is mist and fog. A scholar who sees the depth of the emotions and beyond to other realms and other worlds. Directional and yet non-directional, non-egoic. Any gender. Wearing a hood that could be read as a mage’s robe or a hoodie. In a brooding teen’s room or a castle. Asymmetrical. The Blues. Blue tones of the sky and of the ocean, clear tones. Changing light.. Clear at times and foggy at others.
