PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The
Metamorphosis is a novella by Franz Kafka that tells the story of
Gregor Samsa, a salesman who wakes up one day as a huge insect. This is a
new musical version with 4 performers who should be excellent
singer/actors (playing instruments a plus but not necessary). This
production will rehearse in Syracuse, NY May 20-31, 2024, will have a
brush-up rehearsal in NYC July 27, and will be part of the Edinbugh
Festival Aug 2-26, 2024. That is in Edinbugh, Scotland.

Ethnicities . The famous author as well as his famous creation.
Mid-twenties-mid-forties, androgynous, and highly physical. Awkward,
sensitive, intelligent, earnest, imaginative, introspective, and a bit
of an alien. Should be played by slim, physically striking actor, though
a resemblance Franz Kafka is not necessary. Tenor vocal ran

Female
identifying, early twenties, late teens. Optimistic and naïve, the
point of being concerningly sheltered. The family’s baby, and, for much
of the play, Gregor’s sole connection the outside world and source of
sympathy. Important that the actor be able charm the audience without
having them laugh at the character. Alto/mezzo vocal range with belting
ability play basic ukulele or another stringed instrument is ideal. All
ethnicities.

ethnicities any gender. Male Identifying. Any age to play mid-forties
or older. Bass/baritone vocal range. An imposing though sometimes
sympathetic figure whose presence casts a shadow over the rest of the
family. Always knows exactly what’s best for the family, even when he
doesn’t. Ideally plays guitar or another mobile stringed instrument.
(since the vocal range must be a Bass/Baritone, probably mainly male
vocal ranges specifically )

Identifying, any age over 22 to play mid-thirties or older. Soprano
vocal range with good musical theater mix. Ineffectual and
unaffectionate, eager to keep the peace and to keep her opinions to
herself, while taking care of her husband and children. Ideally plays
guitar or another mobile stringed instrument.
