This week the House Appropriations Committee begins the process of
passing its FY23 Interior and Labor HHS appropriations bills, which
contain funding for the NEA, NEH, and CPB. The action starts with the Interior Subcommittee markup this afternoon at 4 pm ET. The Labor HHS Subcommittee markup with CPB funding is set for Thursday at 5:30 pm ET.
The draft Interior appropriations bill provides $207 million for the NEA and NEH each in FY 23,
which is $27 million over the current FY 22 funding level, $3.45
million over the FY23 Biden-Harris budget request, and $3 million over
the AEMI's ask
of $204 million for FY 23. (We should learn the FY23 CPB funding number
by Wednesday evening, when the bill is posted online for inspection.)
We
have a long way to go in the FY 23 appropriations process, especially
since there is no budget deal to establish overall caps yet. However,
this strong House number for FY23 NEA and NEH funding is a good start.
