Additional Instructions:
For
consideration, prepare one brief song or one brief monologue in the
style of something within the season. Bring a headshot and resume
stapled together. An accompanist will be provided. If unable to attend
this EPA, performers are welcome to send a headshot and resume
submissions for season consideration to submissions@michaelcassara.net. However, note: EPA procedures are in effect; we are unable to schedule any appointments at this email address.
EPA
Procedures are in effect for this audition. An Equity Monitor will be
provided. Always bring your Equity Membership card to auditions.
Equity
encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply
cloth face mask, surgical mask, singer’s mask, or respirator (N95, KN95,
or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters, and bandanas are not
recommended. Singer’s masks can be found at www.broadwayreliefproject.com/singersmask.
Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to
arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get
dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing
rooms.
The maximum capacity in the holding room is 80. The maximum capacity in the audition room is 52.

Seeking:

Buddy Holly: white, male, early 20s. Singer/Songwriter from Lubbock,
TX. Passionate to the point of stubborn about music. Starts nai?ve and
nerdy, grows in confidence to become a true rock ‘n roll star. Plays
Guitar and sings extremely well. Able to comfortably solo on electric
guitar.
- Jerry Allison + Belmont: white, early 20s, male. Good
looking drummer from Lubbock, Texas with cheeky humor. Play drums at
advanced level - please specify additional instrumental abilities.

Joe B. Maudlin + Belmont: white, early 20s, male. Serious character
with musical ability from Lubbock, Texas. Plays upright Bass at advanced
level - please specify additional instrumental abilities.

Hipockets Duncan + Clear Lake Emcee: white, mid 30s to early 50s, male.
An exuberant hometown radio DJ from Lubbock, Texas, with an air of
authority and a keen sense of humor. Able to sing – instrumental ability
is a plus but Not required for this role.
- Maria Elena: Latina,
20s, female. Well educated, with an innocent quality. Sings and plays
one of the following instruments at a solid level: sax, trumpet,
trombone, violin, piano, guitar, bass, drums. Will double as Ensemble.

Norman Petty + Others: white, 40s, male. A record producer from Clovis,
New Mexico, with a business-like manner and a love of making records.
Instrumental ability (particularly country fiddle or guitar family) is a
plus but not required for this role. Will double as Ensemble, including
Hayrider.
- The Big Bopper + Others: white, 20s-30s, male. Large
physical presence with a distinctively resonant voice and sense of
humor. Acoustic guitar abilities a plus, but not critical. May also
double as English DJ + Decca Producer.
- Ritchie Valens: Latino,
early 20s, male. Handsome, with serious charisma and the ability to hold
the stage on his own. Best known for his 1958 hit “La Bamba.” Able to
sing - instrumental ability a plus but not required. Will doubles as
Ensemble.
- Vi Petty: any ethnicity, 30s-40s, female. The wife of
Norman Petty with a heart of gold and a great sense of humor. Plays
piano at a strong level.
“What The Constitution Means To Me”

Debater: Black/Indigenous/Person of Color, 18+ to play teen, female.
Appears in Act 2 only. Engaging, passionate, intelligent, and clever.
Improvisation a plus
- Legionnaire: any ethnicity, late 30s-early
50s, male. A stickler for rules and law, he first appears as an
assertive American Legionnaire monitoring the speech and debate. Later,
he becomes Heidi’s friend and assistant. A positive, genuine presence.
“Singin’ In The Rain”

Cosmo Brown: any ethnicity, early 30s-40s, male. Akin to Don’s little
brother. A playful pianist who plays on set for silent films. Don’s best
friend and previous dance partner. A strong tapper.
- Lina Lamont:
any ethnicity, 30s-40s, female. A dim-witted silent film star who
possesses a theatrical personality and less than pleasant voice. She is
Don’s regular co-star.
- Don Lockwood: any ethnicity, 30s-late 40s,
male. A charming Hollywood actor who is Lina’s regular co-star and
Cosmo’s best friend. A strong tapper.
- R.F. Simpson: any ethnicity, 50s-60s, male. A successful film producer who leads the way in creating a new movie musical.
- Roscoe Dexter: any ethnicity, 40s, male. A famous and theatrical film director who works with Lina and Don. A true artist.

Kathy Selden: any ethnicity, late 20s-early 30s, female. A genuinely
talented actress who performs as Lina’s speaking/singing voice and falls
in love with Don. A strong tapper.

Olivia: Female, 18+ to play 15, white-passing Latina. Quirky,
intelligent, independent but lonely. Olivia was primarily raised by her
father after she chose him during her parents divorce. She tries to
understand the world through writing, but has become unmoored by the
trials and tribulations of adolescence.
- Beatriz: Female, 40s, non-white Latina (Cuban). A firecracker, protective but often overbearing. Doubles as Janet.

Aaron: Male, 40s, White. Olivia’s dad and Beatriz’s ex-husband. Aaron
is a loving father but has grown distant and apathetic since marrying
his new wife. Doubles as Joe, attendant, and Reader 2.
- Manuel:
Male, 40s, Latino. Manuel is Beatriz’s intellectually curious boyfriend
who has trouble taking responsibility for himself. Doubles as Tama?l
seller, Uemura, and Reader 1.

over-achiever of the group, Missy has now blossomed into a full-fledged
adult over-achiever. She is an elementary school teacher with
cat-eyeglasses. She is an elementary school teacher and has recently
returned from her honeymoon with her new husband Bill. She has an
inner-sexiness that comes out every once-in-a-while, much to her
surprise and embarrassment. (Soprano with belt. Range: F#3–A5)

Cindy Lou: female, late 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity/race. Cindy Lou is
the "bad girl" of the group, now reformed (to a point). She is sexy with
a dry and sassy wit, and has a miles-high jet-black beehive, a cross
between the Ronettes and early Priscilla Presley. She has a soft side
and inner depth, revealed in an Act II monologue and ballad. (Mezzo
Soprano with belt — sings lead vocal line on most group songs. Range:
A3–E5)
- Suzy: female, late 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity/race.
Happy-go-lucky, a little giddy, a little silly, and a little pregnant.
She’s always willing to go along with anyone and anything, and she seems
to giggle at just about anything. She married Ritchie, her high-school
sweetheart. (Mezzo/Alto with big belt. Range: C#3–E5)
- Betty Jean:
female, late 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity/race. The self-anointed clown
of the group, always vying for attention from her best friend Cindy Lou.
She loves that she is finally in charge of the group, if only for this
one performance. She has worked at Harper’s Hardware since High School
and is proud to have made it into corporate sales. She is struggling
with her marriage and has an inner strength that belies her goofiness.
(Strong Alto with big belt. Range: D3–Eb5)
“The Refugees (World Premiere)”
Seeking:

Poppy: female, 40s-50s, white. Highly intelligent and cultured,
upper-class socialite. Generally well- intentioned yet slightly aloof.
Adroit skill to keep up appearance in spite of deep troubles.

Wynn: male, 18+ to play 17, white. Sarcastic teenaged son, coping with
trauma from recent a leg injury. Possesses untapped leadership ability.

Salma: female, 30s, MENA (Middle Eastern/North African). Social worker
with highly professional demeanor. Distant but has inner warmth and
compassion. Can be strong and outspoken. Arabic is her first language
(but only speaks a few words in Arabic within this play).
- Barry: male, 40s-50s, white. American ex-pat. Charismatic straight-talker who’s a bit rough around the edges.

family man. Physically imposing. Muslim who speaks Arabic.

20s to mid 30s, any ethnicity/race. An established employee of
Maraczek's Parfumerie, he resembles a hopeless romantic. Shy,
intelligent, and soft spoken. Strong singer, with great comedic
instincts. Classic baritenor, B2-F4.
- Arpad Laszlo: male, 18+
(character is late teens to very early 20s), any ethnicity/race.
Delivery boy at Maraczek's Parfumerie. His exuberance is infectious and
commitment to his job remarkable. He is ambitious and adorable. Youthful
baritenor, Bb2-E4.
- Ladislav Sipos: male, 40s-50s, any
ethnicity/race. Not the brightest employee at Maraczek's Parfumerie. A
confidant to Georg, he is an optimistic family man who looks like a

Ritter: female, late 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity/race. Employed at
Maraczek's Parfumerie. She is sexy and learned in the ways of romance,

ethnicity/race. A veteran employee at Maraczek's Parfumerie; though he
is considered dapper and occasionally charming, he reveals himself to be

Parfumerie. With a commanding presence, his dedication to the trade is
rivaled only by his faithfulness to his wife. Character baritone, B2-C4.

uptight waiter insistent on creating a romantic atmosphere. Rich
baritone.
