Synopsis:
In the early 1950s, a small-town DJ named Allen Freed became the
biggest name in American music. His color-blind love for music and
musicians triggered the beginning of desegregation on the airwaves and
beyond. "Rock and Roll Man" takes place during a fever dream in which J
Edgar Hoover, as prosecutor, and Little Richard, as defense attorney,
square off in a fantasy courtroom putting Freed’s legacy on trial. The
show incorporates a driving and electrifying original score, as well as
over 25 legendary rock and roll hits by artists including Little
Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, LaVern Baker, and Buddy Holly,
many of whom also appear as characters in the musical.

Jerry
Lee Lewis and Others: Male, 20s-30s, white. Sexy, dynamic and
charismatic. Edgy Jerry Lee Lewis: Smooth, suave, manipulating Dick
Clark. Understands early rock n’ roll style. Strong mover/dancer.
Bari-tenor. This role is cast, seeking understudies only.
Buddy
Holly, Pat Boone, Ensemble, and Others: Male, 20s-30s, white. Lean,
charismatic, and handsome. Dynamic, with a great sense of humor.
Distinct characters range from the clean-cut, vanilla, and smooth Pat
Boone to the charming, and appealing Buddy Holly. Bari-tenor. A strong
mover/dancer. This role is cast, seeking understudies only.
Screamin’
Jay Hawkins, Chuck Berry, Quartet, and Others: Male, 30s, black.
Dynamic, charismatic, and energetic with a larger than life presence.
The infectious showman, Chuck Berry and the outrageous and wildly
theatrical Screamin Jay. Excellent singer. Understands early rock n’
roll attitude and vocal styles. Bari-tenor. Moves well. This role is
cast, seeking understudies only.
Frankie Lymon, Dave Cooper, and
Others: Male, Black, 20+, youthful-looking. Frankie Lymon at the height
of his fame was the star of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. A teen
idol, tenor voice. Sings "Why Do Fools Fall in Love." Spectacular, young
pop tenor.
Quartet Members, and As Cast: Male, black, 20s-50s.
Strong and versatile, with expert harmony and stylistic abilities,
doo-wop and group singing experience is a major plus, as well as a
strong movement background.
Jackie, Alan's Mother, and Others:
Female, 30s-Early 40s, white. Versatile. Jackie is Alan's second wife.
Strong-willed, intelligent, driven, and confident. Alan's Mother (in a
flashback) is judgmental and narrow-minded. Has a great sense of humor
and great dance and vocal skills.
Lavern Baker, and Others:
Female, late 20s to 30s, Black. A charismatic and dynamic singer with a
big voice, a big attitude, and an even bigger presence. Moves/dances
well.
Alana, Betty, and Others: Female, White, mid-20s to early
30s. Alana is Alan’s teenage daughter. Open, attractive, earnest. Betty,
Alan's first wife, a pretty, sweet, friendly, and nurturing wife, and
mother. A strong, classic pop singer and a strong mover/dancer.
