Since April 1, 2021, more than 800 UMWA miners have been on strike at Warrior Met Coal, Inc. (“Warrior Met”) in Brookwood, AL. A year later, the company is still refusing to value the workers who have consistently put themselves at risk, both physically and financially, in order to make this company profitable.
UMWA miners helped Warrior Met through a bankruptcy in 2016, agreeing to nearly $1.1 billion in concessions to keep the company afloat. Now, with metallurgical coal prices at an all time high, they are asking for nothing more than what they deserve–adequate recognition of their work and the sacrifices made by themselves and their families. While the support from the greater labor movement has been fortifying, this strike has not been easy for UMWA members. Miners have had to seek other work, forgo family birthdays and holidays and have lived with severe financial insecurity for a year.
To mark the one-year anniversary of the strike and to demonstrate the power and of the labor movement, we ask you to join us in solidarity with UMWA members and their families for a rally on April 6, 2022 from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Tannehill State Park (12632 Confederate Parkway, McCalla, AL 35111).
