Production Description

Casting Equity actors for "Good People."

Actors & Performers

Margie: Female, 50

a woman from a blue-collar family in South Boston; Margie (pronounced with a hard ‘G’) is poorly educated and debt strapped, with a disabled kid at home; she is filled with resentment, fear, and need; she is searching for a way out of her situation when she remembers someone from her past who has made good; she attempts to reconnect with
him, but he has long since left the world that she is still in.

Stevie: Male, 20-35

Margie’s boss at the Dollar store, and still maintains their friendship after he fires her; he is a nice guy who is often made fun of by colleagues.

Dottie: Female, 60-69

Margie’s landlady who also takes care of Margie’s child who has a disability. Dottie is patient with Margie and her constant financial woes but only to a point; Dottie is not in a position to be giving away free housing and does need to get paid at the end of the day.

Jean: 50

a loyal friend to Margie, there when she needs her; she has a comic edge to her and uses that humor to make tough situations feel better.

Mike: Male, 50

grew up in the same neighborhood as Margie, but has gone beyond the blue-collar lifestyle he grew up in; he is now a doctor living with his wife (Kate) who is nothing like the women of Southie; he is clinging on to his new life just waiting for the inner-Southie
in him to come in and destroy what he has created for himself.

Kate: Female, 30-35

the opposite of the other characters in so many ways; she is a kind, well educated, has manners and grew up privileged; she is a college professor and although she can be pushed a little bit she will fight if you push her too hard; she is married to Mike.

Casting Note from The Director: At its core, “Good People” addresses the issues of class within a familiar, very American moral theological framework: fate versus free will. Attention to casting through an ethnically conscious lens is vital to creating an honest portrait of the “miserable” poor white working-class Americans encountering the world of the “comfortable” professional class.
