Senate Information and toolkit for next stage of AEMI FY23 federal arts funding advocacy campaign

Our efforts are now focused on urging the Senate to approve $207 million for the NEA and NEH each in FY23, the amount already passed by the House in July. We need to put pressure on both Democrats and Republicans in the Senate because the draft Senate FY23 Interior Appropriations bill only includes $195 for the NEA and NEH each.

As explained in the toolkit, AEMI union members should use this new joint Action Network petition to ask their Senators to support $207 million for the NEA and NEH in FY23.  (If your union does not use Action Network, you can send a message to members with this link: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/tell-the-senate-to-support-increased-federal-arts-funding)

This Senate petition is scheduled to run Thursday, September 8th through at least the second week of November. (Timing may change depending on how Congress handles FY23 funding this fall. As of now, we do not expect votes on a full funding bill before the post-election lame duck session.)

GIAA plans
  • Co-sponsor the Action Network petition  (if your union is on Action Network)
  • Send an initial email to your members next week urging them to take action
  • Continuously run social media promoting the Action Network petition beginning on September 8th
  • Send a reminder email message to your members no later than the third week of October
Toolkit includes:
  • Action Network petition link
  • Talking points
  • Template email message to send your members
  • Template social media
  • Social media graphics
Katie Barrows will reach out to communications folks this week to follow-up on specifics related to co-sponsoring the petition and getting started with social media promotion. She is cc'd on this email.

As always, please let us know if you have questions or if we can be helpful in any way.

Best,
Michael
