Production Description
Casting Equity actors for "The Daughter In Law." Synopsis: Winter in a mining town during the 1912 miner's strike (Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, North Central England). Set against the background of a pit strike, The Daughter In Law tells the story of Luther Gascoyne, a young miner, and his newly wed wife Minnie, a former governess. The tensions and misunderstandings they suffer as a result of their different backgrounds are exacerbated by the powerful influence of Luther’s mother and brought to open conflict when it is discovered that Luther, before his marriage, has made another woman pregnant. To reclaim her husband and salvage their failing marriage, Minnie must wrest Luther from a more formidable threat than the pregnant girl -- his mother's doting dominance.

Breakdown Of Roles
MINNIE (Female, any ethnicity, 30). The daughter-in-law. Intelligent, passionate, aspires to a better
life, but has a level-headed sense of the current one. Turned down Luther's limp marriage proposal 10
years earlier in favor of going away to make her own living as a governess. Though they were on
again/off again for the past decade, Luther never caught on that Minnie wanted to be actively pursued.
Nobody better came along, so Minnie finally proposed to Luther. They have been married for 6 weeks.
Though she loves him and is attracted to his strength and basic goodness, she feels alone in the
marriage. Luther is distanced from her by his mother's overbearing care. Minnie is educated and
comparatively well-spoken. Strong willed but feels trapped in her situation. Will always speak her mind
and can hold her own against her resentful and gormless husband and mother-in-law. Minnie speaks
in an Eastwood dialect softened by Received Pronunciation.
LUTHER GASCOYNE (Male, any ethnicity, early 30s). He and Minnie have been married for 6 weeks.
A coal miner who is physically strong, rugged, and hard-working. Simple but not stupid. Sexy and
appealing in a working man way, but somewhat menacing and not instinctively romantic. Luther is
under the thumb of his mother, who has always coddled him. His ineffectualness causes frustration &
rage within. He does not see his dilemma for what it is, nor can he find a way out of it, but he feels the
urge to break free and begin his own life as a man. A good man of principle by nature - feels guilty
about fathering a bastard. Loves Minnie but is stung by her frequent criticisms, which lead to full-blown
arguments. Has trouble articulating his feelings and wants to do the right thing. Luther speaks in an
Eastwood dialect.
MRS. GASCOYNE (Female, any ethnicity, mid 60s). Mother of Luther and Joe, lioness to her cubs.
She is a smart, single-minded woman of purpose and tenacity who is extremely strong willed, nononsense, and powerful. She speaks in an Eastwood dialect.
JOE GASCOYNE (Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s). A good looking man. Speaks in an Eastwood dialect.
Luther's younger brother. He is a physically strong coal miner. A bit of a charmer, liked by Minnie. Doesnot take off his cap when he enters a room. Wears a sling after injuring his arm showing off at work.
While his mother cuts his meat for him, he lays his failings as a person squarely at her feet. Always threatening vaguely to move to Australia, which could be his only escape from his mother, or marriage
to a younger version of her. Smart and somewhat idealistic. Wants to protect his brother and Minnie
and take care of everyone’s feelings. He’ll stand up for what he thinks is right.
MRS. PURDY (Female, any ethnicity, early - mid 40s). A busy, red-faced, slightly plump working-class woman. Mother of Bertha, the 23-year-old that Luther impregnated just prior to marrying Minnie. She
negotiates a deal to pay for her silence on the matter. For Mrs. Purdy, like Mrs. Gascoyne, arranging the business of her adult offspring is a full-time job. A sweet woman who just wants to do the best
thing for her daughter. Mrs. Purdy speaks in an Eastwood dialect.
CABMAN (Male, any ethnicity, 30). Speaks in an Eastwood dialect. Will understudy both Joe and Luther. *Please note CABMAN is a walk-on role with two lines.
