James Atkinson, 56 – head of the family. Born in Greenwich Village. Owner of the successful Atkinson’s Marble Yards
Thomas Horton, 43 (white, Italian)– Runs Horton’s Dairy, nephew to the owners, in love with Anna but can’t quite buck his traditional Italian family and marry Anna
Neil Curran is 33, husband of Alice. reporter, city newspaper editor.
Note: The Atkinson and Neil Curran characters are all Caucasian of English/British Isles descent.
Catherine (Caitrin) Atkinson, 55 – wife to James, mother of their five adult children. She now spends most of her time at The Settlement House working with the poor.
Anna Atkinson, 36 – bookkeeper for her father as well as a few other businesses most notably Horton’s Dairy on city island where her longtime beau runs his family’s business.
Alice Atkinson Curran, 33, -- the only Atkinson offspring married when the story begins. Wife of Neil, mother of 10year old Kate. After an accident she’s now wheelchair bound and newly home from the hospital trying to adjust.
Jim Atkinson, 30 – the only boy in the family. He grew up in the Marble cutting business and wants to take it further than his father or grandfather had ever dreamt.
Ella Atkinson, 27-- she is adventurous and romantic, a dreamer. Her best friend is her sister Kate. Ella is tall and beautiful, graceful and artistic. She works as a map illustrator which just fuels her desire to see the world.
Kate Atkinson, 25 -- is independent and looking for freedom. She is a milliner by profession, and even in a politically inclined family, tests their patience by getting involved in the suffrage movement.
Tillie Epstein, 25 (white, Jewish) – friend of Kate’s from work. Comes from a family of tailors; lives on the Lower East Side; from an observant Jewish family.
Farris Cunningham, 37 African American-- Cunningham has a southern born wife and two girls. They live blocks away in the middle class African American section of Manhattan in the west 30s. Cunningham’s plumbing business was destroyed in race riots which has led him to work for Jim.
LEDYARD SANDS, mid 30s white – client of Lindstrom’s; NYC aristocracy from an original family, now an adventurer. Love interest of Ella.

John – workman on Jim’s crew
Peter – young boy picks up work as a gofer in union square so wellknown by everyone
Irene – only female colleague of Neil’s at the crime desk, friend of Alice Atkinson
AUNT RIFKA Epstein older – Tillie’s aunt who works in the garment biz, married to Uncle Saul
Uncle Saul Epstein – Tillie’s uncle also in the Garment trade
MR. LINDSTROM, Swedish descent – Ella’s boss at the mapmaking company
