Seeking:
Chip
Tolentino: An athletic, social, boy scout and champion of the
Twenty-Fourth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, he returns to defend
his title, but he finds puberty hitting at an inopportune moment. C4 -
B5. Male presenting character.
Logainne Schwartzandgrunenierre
(Schwartzy): Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware
speller, often making comments about current political figures. She is
driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to
win to make her two fathers proud. She is somewhat of a neat freak,
speaks with a lisp, and will be back next year. A3 - F5. Female
presenting character.
Leaf Coneybear: The second runner-up in his
district, Leaf gets into the competition on a lark and finds everything
about the bee incredibly amusing. He is home-schooled and comes from a
large family of former hippies. He has severe attention deficit disorder
and spells words correctly while in a trance. A3 - A5. Female
presenting character.
William Barfee: A Putnam County Spelling Bee
finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to
peanuts and is back for vindication. His famous "Magic Foot" method of
spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he only has one
working nostril and a touchy, bullying personality. He develops a crush
on Olive. E4 - B5. Male presenting character.
Marcy Park: A recent
transfer from Virginia, Marcy placed ninth in last year's nationals. She
speaks six languages, is a member of all-American hockey, a
championship rugby player, plays Chopin and Mozart on multiple
instruments, sleeps only three hours a night, hides in the bathroom
cabinet, and is getting very tired of always winning. She is the poster
child for the Over-Achieving Asian, and attends a Catholic school called
"Our Lady of Intermittent Sorrows." She is also not allowed to cry. C4 -
E5. Female presenting character.
Olive Ostrovsky: A young newcomer
to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her
father is working late, as usual, but he is trying to come sometime
during the bee. Having found comfort in its words and vastness, Olive
made friends with her dictionary at a very young age, helping her to
make it to the competition. She starts enormously shy and shyly
blossoms. B3 - F5. Female presenting character.
Rona Lisa Peretti:
The number one realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling
Bee Champion herself, and the returning moderator. She is a sweet woman
who loves children, but she can be very stern when it comes to dealing
with Vice Principal Panch and his feelings for her. Her interest in the
competition is unflagging and drives it forward. B3 - F5
Douglas
Panch: The Vice Principle. Frustrated with his life, he finds the drive
of the young spellers alien to him. After five years' absence from the
Bee, Panch returns as judge. There was an "incident" at the Twentieth
Annual Bee, but he claims to be in "a better place" now, thanks to a
high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. He is infatuated with Rona Lisa
Peretti, but she does not return his affections. Male presenting
character.
Mitch Mahoney: The Official Comfort Counselor. An
ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service with the Bee, and
hands out juice boxes to losing students. He has no idea how to offer
comfort but does find himself wishing he could find a way to make the
kids feel better. E4 - A5. Male presenting character.
Carl Dad:
Schwarzy's main trainer, the more intense and competitive of Schwarzy's
fathers. Normally played by actor playing Leaf. G3 - D5.
Dan Dad: The more laid back and ineffectual of Schwarzy's fathers. Normally played by the actor playing Mitch. G3 - D5.
Jesus Christ: Deity invoked by a speller in need. Normally played by the actor playing Chip.
Olive's Dad: A fantasy version of Olive's dad coming to the bee from work. Normally played by the actor playing Mitch. E4 - B5.
Olive's Mom: A fantasy version of Olive's mom at her Ashram in India. Normally played by the actor playing Rona. D4 - E5.
"Irving Berlin’s White Christmas"
Seeking:
Bob
Wallace: (35-40) A former army captain and half of the song-and-dance
duo Wallace and Davis, Bob is a world-wise, cynical yet charming
individual with a strong sense of loyalty and duty. He falls for Betty,
the elder of the Haynes sisters. His key songs include "Happy Holidays,"
"White Christmas," "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep," and "How
Deep is the Ocean." Male presenting character.
Phil Davis: (30-35)
Phil, the other half of the duo, is Bob's complete opposite - a
fun-loving, adventurous, and somewhat mischievous individual who's
always on the lookout for a good time and romance. He's instantly
smitten with Judy Haynes. His main songs include "The Best Things Happen
While You're Dancing," "Sisters (Reprise)," "I Love a Piano," and
"Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep." Male presenting character.
Betty
Haynes: (30-35) Betty is the older Haynes sister. She's independent,
pragmatic, and protective of her younger sister Judy. Despite her
skepticism, she finds herself falling for Bob. Her featured songs
include "Sisters," "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep," "Love, You
Didn't Do Right By Me," and "How Deep is the Ocean." Female presenting
character.
Judy Haynes: (25-30) Judy is the more vivacious and
adventurous of the Haynes sisters. She's a romantic at heart and often
the driving force behind many of their decisions, including the one to
follow Bob and Phil to Vermont. Her key songs include "Sisters," "The
Best Things Happen While You're Dancing," "I Love a Piano," and "Snow."

General Henry Waverly: (50-60) The
General is a stern, authoritative figure with a gruff exterior but a
kind and caring heart. He's the owner of the failing Vermont Inn and was
the commanding officer of Bob and Phil during World War II. He doesn't
have any solo songs, but his character plays a significant role in the
plot. Male presenting character.
Martha Watson: (45-50) Martha is the
General's lovable and nosy housekeeper. She's a Broadway performer in
retirement and still has a flair for the dramatic. She has a heart of
gold and only wants what's best for the General. Her main songs include
"Let Me Sing and I'm Happy" and "Falling Out of Love Can Be Fun." Female
presenting character.
Susan Waverly: (9-12) Susan is the General's
curious and intelligent granddaughter with dreams of becoming a
performer. She's wise beyond her years but still has a childlike
innocence about her. She sings "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy." Female
presenting character.

an “impersonator.” In the production, Elvis sings: “Memories Are Made
Of This,” “That’s All Right,” “Long Tall Sally,” “Peace In The Valley,”
“Party,” and “Hound Dog.”
JERRY LEE LEWIS: 20s-early 30s; male
presenting character; singer/pianist; he was rock ‘n’ roll’s legendary
piano prodigy and celebrated “Last Man Standing.” A superb piano player,
able to play like Jerry Lee Lewis; fun, energetic; comic skills a plus.
In the production, Jerry Lee Lewis sings: “Real Wild Child,” “Great
Balls Of Fire,” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.”
CARL PERKINS: Mid
20s; male presenting character; singer/guitar player (lead guitar); he
was the American pioneer of rockabilly music and best known for his song
“Blue Suede Shoes.” An excellent lead guitarist. An amp will be
provided. In the production, Carl Perkins sings: “Matchbox,” “Who Do You
Love?,” “My Babe,” and “See You Later, Alligator.”
JOHNNY CASH: Late
20s-late 30s; male presenting character; singer/guitar player. Johnny
Cash at the dawn of his epic career. Must be familiar with his music and
able to play guitar; tall; should sound and look somewhat like Johnny
without being an “impersonator.” In the production, Johnny Cash sings:
“Folsom Prison Blues,” “Sixteen Tons,” “I Walk The Line,” and “Riders In
The Sky.”
SAM PHILLIPS: Mid-30s-40s; male presenting character;
“Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and founder of Sun Records who discovered
Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and many
others including Roy Orbison and B.B. King; a towering and charismatic
figure in American music.
DYANNE: 20s-early 30s; female presenting
character Excellent singer; she was an aspiring singer and Elvis’s
girlfriend; ahead of her time and assertive, she’s a great singer with a
wide range; sings solos and back-up throughout the show; sings “Fever”
in her alto range and covers the high soprano part of “Riders In The
Sky” (Johnny Cash song). In the production, Dyanne sings “Fever” and “I
Hear You Knockin’.”
"Beautiful: The Carole King Musical"
Seeking:
CAROLE
KING: An aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, appealing, funny and
vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good
natured, unassuming, and often the peace maker in difficult situations. A
reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music. Age: 18 to 30
(Vocal range: Eb3 to Eb5). Female presenting character.
GERRY GOFFIN:
Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. Innately
sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving
for more. Age: 18 to 30 (Vocal range: D3 to A4). Male presenting
character.
BARRY MANN: A songwriter who becomes romantically involved
with Cynthia. He is good natured, appealing & neurotic. Ambitious,
but likeable. Age: 18 to 30 (Vocal range: C3 to A4). Male presenting
character.
CYNTHIA WEILL: A songwriter who becomes romantically
involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. She is sophisticated, smart
& chic with a quick wit. Although self-confident and sarcastic, she
is also extremely likeable. Age: 18 to 30 (Vocal range: G3 to E5).

ENSEMBLE/DON KIRSCHNER: an influential
music publisher and producer. He is a fast talking, energetic force of
nature. Powerful, direct & sometimes intimidating, but he has a real
affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker. Age: 40 to 60 (Vocal
range: A2 to C#4). Male presenting character.
ENSEMBLE/GENIE KLEIN:
Carole’s Jewish mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken
down by life & her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and
unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes. Age: 40 to 50. Female presenting
character.
ENSEMBLE: Strong singers who move to play Drifters,
Shirelles, and other various parts in the show. Also, actors who play
instruments.
