Production Description

Seeking performers for "Camp Half-Blood," an outdoor immersive children’s LARP (live-action role playing) adventure for summer camp program. Production states: "Inspired by the world of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and The Olympians novels, Camp Half-Blood is at the heart of Plato Learning’s mission, 'Adventure Powered by Story.' By bringing tales from mythology, history, and fiction to life, we plunge our campers into the center of the action. They are transported to another world and given the chance to prove themselves as Legendary Heroes. "We don’t just re-stage these age-old tales, we re-frame and re-purpose them into something new that our campers can experience for the first time. There are (foam) sword-fights, puzzles, negotiations, and performance challenges as they journey to complete their heroic Quest."

production states: "Actors play larger than life mythological characters set in the modern-day, not far from the Percy Jackson universe (think Hermes in running shorts instead of a toga). Each week you could be a God, a Hero, a Villain, a Monster, a Nymph, an Oracle, or a combination of these. Everyone must feel comfortable engaging groups of kids, ages 6-12, in improvised in-character dialogue and LARP, or boffer-style, combat (with safe foam weapons) in an outdoor environment on Quest Day, a once-a-week full-day adventure. The ensemble will consist of a team of actors who collaborate with a Quest Director to bring each storyline to life for their particular camp location."

Divdersity Equity Inclusion policy updates: New arts and humanities DEI bill and NEA/NEH equity action plans

Two DEI policy updates to share with you:

1. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) quietly introduced the "Advancing Equity Through the Arts and Humanities Act" last week. 

This bill essentially does two things: 1. Establishes (without funding) a grant program that is focused on combating systemic racism, 2. Directs the NEA and NEH to take a number of actions that are intended to improve access to grants and be more intentional about outreach to and engagement with organizations from underrepresented communities. The bill also creates a task force to create guidelines for the NEA and NEH's antiracism programing and to "reassess equitable outreach and education." (Bill text is here.)

Endorsing organizations include Americans for the Arts, Theatre Communications Group, Opera America, and a number of other arts organizations. (Full list here.)

Despite multiple attempts, D P E was unsuccessful in getting a meeting with Rep. Lee's staff to discuss the bill before its introduction. We still have not received any outreach on the bill from her office.

Please let us know if asked to support this legislation. At this point, we recommend that the AEMI unions remain neutral. In addition to process considerations, we are concerned about the bill's lack of labor protections and there being no labor seat on the task force.

2. The NEA and NEH each released equity action plans as part of the Biden-Harris Administration's "Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government" initiative.
