White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment

Today at 2:00 pm AFL-CIO will have a zoom meeting with staff from the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment. (next Thursday referee to today July 22)

For this meeting there will be two separate topics for discussion: (1) ACCESS TO FEDERAL PROPERTIES and 2) UNION ELIGIBILITY FOR FEDERAL GRANTS AND CONTRACTS.

1. ACCESS TO FEDERAL PROPERTIES. There will be two parts to this discussion. First, the Task Force will give us an update on how they are thinking about this issue (for example, the problem is very different on DOD and non-DOD properties). Second, we will discuss any specific ideas you may have for how best to solve this problem, for both DOD and non-DOD properties.

Recently, we asked unions to send us information about the precise nature of the problem, a fairly substantial number of unions did so, we sent this information to the Task Force, and they found this information very helpful. The question for next Thursday is a slightly different question than the one we asked before; it's not about the nature of the problem, but rather how we might help the Task Force fashion a solution (or solutions) and address the arguments we've been given when we've been denied access.

2. UNION ELIGIBILITY FOR GRANTS AND CONTRACTS. In the 12 sectoral meetings that the Task Force held last month, several unions raised the issue of union eligibility for grants and federal contracts. The question on the table for next Thursday is which grants specifically? Which contracts specifically? Even if your union has not made this proposal, can you think of grants or contracts that would be especially beneficial to be able to apply for? How much of an impact would this have? What might be some issues the Task Force will need to consider if they move forward in this direction?

Please give some thought to both of these topics before the meeting next Thursday. If you need to bring along someone from your union to round out the discussion, please feel free to do so.
