Last October, Wendy and I had the honor of presenting a
10-minute excerpt from my memoir monologue, “The Last Emperor of Flushing,”
at Chen Dance Center in the historic 70 Mulberry St., building in Chinatown, NYC.
This work humorously recalls Alvin’s odd odyssey of growing up in one of
Flushing’s few Chinese families in the 1970s––that ran a Hand Laundry on
Union St, no less!––to later becoming one of its few citizens who could
not speak fluent Chinese. Flushing had become NYC’s second Chinatown!
(Eng is currently expanding this work into a prose memoir.)

As many of you know, 70 Mulberry St.,
a longtime artistic and spiritual hub of the Asian American/NYC Arts world and Chinatown,
suffered a devastating fire on Lunar New Year’s Eve, 2020.
The building is being razed by the city right now.
Please consider joining us in a crucial action...
There is a Community Board 3 Meeting on Thursday, May 14 at 6:30 pm.
Please consider writing a Letter of Support to demand that NYC officials
assure that the displaced Chen Dance Center and the Arts have a home in
the “new 70 Mulberry St.” Please submit Letters of Support by COB Tuesday,
May 12 to Dian Dong at diandong@chendancecenter.org
so that she can submit them to the Community Board.

Possible House vote tonight to cut NEA funding

Hi everyone,

The House Rules Committee ruled in order an amendment by Rep. Grothman (R-WI) to cut NEA and NEH funding by 15% each. This amendment cutting funding to the NEA and NEH could receive a floor vote as early as tonight. (Amendment text is here: https://amendments-rules.house.gov/amendments/GROTWI_092_xml71318155501551.pdf)

DPE is drafting a statement of opposition for release this afternoon that will list the names of the AEMI unions. Because the AEMI unions are on record in support of full federal arts funding, we assume that your union opposes the Grothman amendment that cuts funding. Please email me ASAP if your union does NOT want to be listed on the statement opposing the Grothman amendment.

DPE also advises AEMI unions to ramp up social media advocacy in support of full federal arts funding through at least tonight. For unions wishing to direct their members to take action, the ask is to call their representative and urge a NO vote on any Interior amendment that cuts funding to the NEA or NEH.

We are in touch with Rep. Pingree’s office, who is helping to keep us updated on developments as they unfold. Rep. Pingree will speak against the Grothman amendment when floor debate on the Interior bill commences at approximately 6 pm this evening. Rep. Pingree will also send a Dear Colleague letter urging opposition to the Grothman amendment if there is a floor vote, and she would like to include the AEMI’s opposition in that letter.

Thank you in advance for your quick response to this attack on federal arts funding. We will keep you informed as we learn more.

Village, My Home is a new play that will be performed at this Summer’s Dream Up Festival at Theater for the New City.
In preparation for the New Year, a Village housewife, a team of business people, and inquisitive tourists struggle to find the meaning of home within the context of a bustling New York City. Searching deeply, they question what matters and find surprising connections where they least expect them.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
