WH wants FY 2017 budget cuts for NEA and NEH

Hi everyone,

Please be aware that the White House has asked Congress to reduce the NEA and NEH’s FY 2017 appropriations by $15 million each. (The White House did not appear to request a decrease in FY 2017 funding for CPB.) Should the White House’s proposal be accepted, the NEA and NEH would each have $15 million less to disperse in grants during the current fiscal year, which ends on September 30th.

The attached document charts the White House’s proposed FY 2017 budget reductions alongside the funding levels established by the governing 2017 Continuing Resolution and both the 2017 House and Senate funding bills. See page six for the NEA and NEH reduction requests.

Congress must agree on FY 2017 appropriations by April 28th to avoid a government shutdown. For what it’s worth, initial news reports suggest that the White House’s overall FY 2017 reduction request was not well received by appropriators from both parties. That said, DPE continues to monitor the situation closely. Please let us know if your union learns any information about the FY 2017 appropriations.

Also, thank you to those affiliates who have approved their principals as signatories to the joint letter to Congress requesting continued funding for the NEA, NEH, and CPB. We hope to get the remaining approvals ASAP so that we can send the letter to the Hill this week.
